Dallas Police Department’s Stance on Immigration Enforcement

The Dallas Police Department (DPD) has taken a firm stance against participating in federal immigration raids, a move that comes as a response to increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations across Texas. Interim Chief Michael Igo has been leading a series of community outreach meetings to address growing concerns among immigrant communities about potential deportation raids.

“The Dallas Police Department is not assisting any federal agency on detaining people that are either documented or undocumented in the city of Dallas,” Igo said.

This statement comes at a time when federal agents have conducted immigration enforcement operations in several Texas cities, including Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio. These operations, described by an ICE spokesperson as “enhanced targeted operations,” aimed to “enforce U.S. immigration law and preserve public safety and national security by keeping potentially dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities.”

Community Outreach and Trust-Building

The DPD’s initiative is part of a broader strategy to foster trust and build strong community relations. Chief Igo has been actively engaging with immigrant communities, reassuring them that the police department’s primary goal is to ensure the safety of all Dallas residents, regardless of their immigration status.

“I need you guys to continue to call the police, to not be afraid to come out of your homes to go to work, to send our kids to school,” Igo emphasized during one of the community meetings.

The department’s approach stands in contrast to the aggressive immigration enforcement policies under the Trump administration. While federal agencies have been conducting raids and making arrests, local law enforcement in Dallas is prioritizing community trust over cooperation with ICE.

Impact of Federal Immigration Operations

The recent federal operations have had a significant impact on Texas communities. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area alone, 84 individuals were arrested by ICE. These operations followed President Donald Trump’s immigration-related executive orders, which included plans for mass deportations and raids in sensitive locations.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported that federal agents were targeting “wanted violent offenders.” However, the operations have sparked fear among the estimated 1.6 million undocumented residents in Texas, many of whom are concerned about their safety and the potential for family separations.

Dallas Police Department’s Commitment to Public Safety

While the DPD is taking a stand against participating in federal immigration enforcement, the department remains committed to its primary mission of ensuring public safety. Chief Igo has been clear that individuals with outstanding warrants may still face legal consequences, regardless of their immigration status.

“There’s no room for fear in our community. I am meeting with stakeholders across Dallas to reassure them we’re here to serve and protect all Dallas residents and are committed to enforcing city ordinances and state laws,” Igo stated.

The department’s approach appears to be yielding positive results. The DPD reported an 8.2% decrease in violent crime in 2024, including a 26% reduction in murders, marking the lowest murder rate since before the pandemic. This improvement in public safety suggests that the department’s focus on community trust and cooperation may be contributing to a safer Dallas for all residents.
