The political climate in the United States remains quite volatile. Indeed, as the 2024 presidential election nears ever closer, tension continue to flare. The former 45th president of the United States Donald Trump continues to remain a polarizing political figure. After the first presidential debate which was held on June 27th, though, Trump received a boost in the polls by many reports after he handily outperformed the incumbent president Joe Biden on the debate stage. Biden often appeared incoherent and struggled to answer questions in a concise manner. The election will likely be decided by a few key swing states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, and others.
Recently, a major supreme court ruling placed a significant twist in the upcoming presidential race. The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, declared that president Donald Trump (and future presidents) enjoyed presidential immunity in terms of facing prosecution for official acts done as president. Democrats have been up in arms about the ruling, claiming it sets a dangerous precent that states that presidents are “above the law”. Republicans claim that is is a necessary ruling as Trump has faced significant political opposition and say that the courts have been weaponized against him in a political fashion.
One justice, the well-known conservative Clarence Thomas, is being accused of accepting gifts from foreigners and venturing to Russia in a visit to Vladimir Putins hometown, St. Petersburg. Democrats are attempting to claim that the justice is breaking the law by accepting foreign influences. Democrats claim Thomas may also be committing tax fraud by accepting millions of dollars in gifts. The report claims Thomas accepted gifts from Harlan Crow, a real estate developer. The report claims Crow funded Clarence Thomas’s grandnephews boarding school education, which cost thousands a month. In truth, the allegations are serious and worrisome, and certainly carry the possibility of being able to seriously damage the reputation of the conservative justice should they be true.
