GOP Takes Action Against “Activist Judges”
House Republicans are taking unprecedented steps to challenge federal judges they believe are engaging in judicial activism against President Donald Trump’s policies. The move comes after several Democrat-appointed judges issued rulings blocking Trump’s initiatives on immigration, military policy, and federal bureaucracy reform.
A group of Republican lawmakers including Representatives Brandon Gill, Eli Crane, and Andy Ogles have already filed articles of impeachment against judges they claim have overstepped their constitutional authority. Their actions signal a growing frustration within the GOP over what they perceive as politically motivated judicial interference.
Jordan and Issa Lead Legislative Response
Representative Jim Jordan, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is at the forefront of efforts to curtail what Republicans view as judicial overreach. “Everything is on the table. We’re considering all options. That’s why we passed legislation. There may be a legislative—another legislative remedy we want to look at,” Jordan stated.
Representative Darrell Issa has introduced two significant bills targeting judicial power – the No Rogue Rulings Act and the JUDGES Act. Both pieces of legislation aim to limit district courts’ injunction powers and have already received approval from the House Judiciary Committee.
“Chuck Schumer touts his role in confirming hundreds of ‘progressive judges’ and cheers their recent rulings against President Trump. House Republicans are pushing for unbiased benches,” House Whip Tom Emmer declared, highlighting the partisan divide on the issue.
Democrats Celebrate Judicial Resistance
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has openly celebrated the role Democrat-appointed judges have played in blocking Trump’s agenda. “The good news here is, we did put 235 judges, progressive judges, judges not under the control of Trump, last year on the bench, and they are ruling against Trump time after time after time,” Schumer boasted.
Trump himself has been vocal in criticizing judges like Chief Judge James Boasberg for what he considers judicial overreach. The President has called for impeachment of judges who have ruled against his policies, particularly those related to immigration enforcement.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and other GOP leaders have endorsed the idea of judiciary hearings to address the issue of perceived judicial activism. These hearings would aim to expose what Republicans believe is politically motivated decision-making by Democrat-appointed judges.
While impeachment articles have been introduced, conviction would require a two-thirds majority in the Senate, making the legislative approach championed by Jordan and Issa potentially more viable for achieving Republican goals.
