In her new memoir, former First Lady Melania Trump sheds light on the emotional toll Rosie O’Donnell’s false allegations about her son, Barron Trump, had on her family. In 2016, O’Donnell suggested in a now-deleted tweet that Barron might have autism, under the guise of raising awareness, but Melania says the claims were nothing more than “sheer malice.”
“There is nothing shameful about autism, but Barron is not autistic,” Melania writes, according to USA Today. She goes on to describe how Barron was bullied both online and in person following O’Donnell’s tweet and video, which implied Barron’s behavior suggested he was on the autism spectrum. Melania was appalled by O’Donnell’s actions, stating, “Bullying a ten-year-old boy is egregious, but doing so under the flimsy pretense of ‘bringing awareness’ … is truly repulsive.”
Melania’s frustration is evident as she recalls the incident, expressing her heartbreak over seeing her son used as a tool for political attacks. “It felt like my heart was breaking into pieces,” she writes. Although O’Donnell later apologized, Melania says it was far from enough: “No apology can undo the harm inflicted upon him.”
This incident was one of the catalysts for Melania’s “Be Best” initiative, aimed at addressing online bullying, especially among children. The bullying her son experienced underscored for her the importance of tackling the cruelty often seen in online spaces.
O’Donnell’s apology, however, didn’t mend the damage done to Barron or ease the pain his mother felt. As Melania Trump reflected in her memoir, the experience was a reminder of how easily political animosity can target even the youngest members of a family.
Boy, is Melania’s new book causing a stir…
