OceanGate Co-Founder Reveals Portal of Hell Dive Plans

Guillermo Söhnlein, co-founder of OceanGate, is preparing for an exciting expedition to the Portal of Hell.

Blue Marble, established by Söhnlein and two additional individuals, plans to investigate Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, which reaches a depth of over 600 feet. This is an unprecedented expedition to the depths of the ocean, where the brave crew will venture into the abyss, surrounded by absolute darkness. The expedition has set out to conduct a comprehensive scientific survey of the area.

Dean’s Blue Hole also referred to as the Sapphire Abyss, was created 15,000 years ago and ranks as the world’s third deepest sinkhole.

Over 200,000 people visit the natural rock amphitheater surrounding the hole each year, making it a popular destination. Unfortunately, it also holds the unfortunate record for the highest number of fatalities in the world. Over the past few years, 130 to 200 individuals have tragically lost their lives after diving into the hole.

The abyss is an extraordinary vase-shaped cavity with a narrow opening at the top. This particular feature adds an element of danger to the task at hand, as the team will be operating in complete darkness.

The team plans to use an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) to explore uncharted territory and personally participate in the dive, exposing themselves to potentially hazardous currents and thermal layers.

Blue Marble Exploration is excited to announce its upcoming expedition to the Portal of Hell in the Bahamas. This incredible journey will provide valuable insights into the Earth’s ancient climate, marine ecosystems, and the possibility of discovering new species.

Söhnlein discussed last year’s incident with the media and expressed his ambition to analyze what went wrong, extract valuable lessons, and make another attempt. He believes this is crucial for the betterment of humanity and serves as a fitting tribute to the five crew members who made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuing their passion.

The co-founder of OceanGate said he intended to explore Dean’s Blue Hole and that last year’s tragedy has not affected his plans.

Recently, the  1,380-foot deep Taam Ja blue hole in Quintana Roo, Mexico’s Chetumal Bay, was acknowledged as the world’s deepest blue hole, surpassing the previous record holder, the Dragon Blue Hole in the South China Sea, which extends 988 feet below sea level.
