Amika Initiates Voluntary Recall of Popular Shampoo
Hair care brand Amika has announced a voluntary recall of its Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo. The recall affects all sizes and lots of the shampoo purchased in 2023 or 2024. This action comes in response to regulatory non-compliance issues and concerns about potential bacterial contamination.
“We initiated this recall after determining that various production batches at our third-party manufacturing site do not meet our stringent quality standards, due to the presence or potential presence of a bacterium called P. gergoviae,” Amika said in a statement.
The recall was prompted by customer feedback regarding changes in the product’s odor and rare cases of temporary irritation. It’s important to note that the recall does not include the Mirrorball conditioner or any other Amika products.
While no serious adverse health events have been reported – thankfully – the presence of P. gergoviae in cosmetic products can pose potential risks. The bacterium is associated with respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and sepsis, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses.
“We want to reassure you that, after consultation with an independent toxicology group, we are confident the use of this product does not pose a serious health or safety risk to healthy people,” Amika stated.
However, as a precautionary measure, consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately. Those with compromised immune systems or broken skin may be more susceptible to infection and should be particularly cautious.
Are You Affected?
Amika is offering full refunds to customers who have purchased the affected shampoo. Refunds can be obtained through retail locations or by contacting Amika directly. The company is also taking steps to address the issue and prevent future occurrences.
Amika is currently reformulating the product and enhancing manufacturing protocols to prevent this happening again – but between this and the many recalls of food products lately, it’s hard to ignore how common this is becoming in America.
