TikTok User’s Post Shows How Charging Cable Nearly Set Her Home Ablaze

A TikTok user named Jules (@homesteadingmommasaga) shared a terrifying near-disaster in a recent video, revealing that her home almost caught fire due to a malfunctioning USB-C charging cable. Jules explained that as she was preparing to leave her house, she noticed a burning smell and began to panic, unsure of the source.

In her video, Jules described the moment, saying, “Something was definitely hot… I’m looking around, and I’m freaking out because I could smell something.”

As she searched for the cause, Jules realized that the culprit was a charging cable that had been left on a blanket. The cord, which she said was “fairly new” and “hardly used,” had been used to charge her son’s tablet. After her son unplugged the tablet, he left the cord on top of a blanket for about four hours. Jules returned to find the charging cable burning through the blanket.

The TikToker shared a video showing the bent and damaged USB-C cord along with the hole it burned into the blanket, which was a gift from her son’s aunt. Her son was heartbroken after seeing the damage. Jules emphasized that this was the first time she had experienced such a situation and urged her viewers to unplug unused cords to prevent similar incidents. “Several people have posted and said their house has burned down or they had the same thing happen,” she wrote in the comments.

USB-C charging cables, used for devices like iPads and iPhones, can become a fire hazard if damaged or left plugged in after a device has finished charging. Soft surfaces, such as blankets or carpets, can trap heat and exacerbate the risk. Many TikTok users were grateful for the warning and shared their own experiences with overheating chargers.

Some commenters shared tips to prevent similar issues, with one writing, “I always unplug from the wall. A phobia of mine before I leave the home.” Another noted, “I plug all electronics in the kitchen. I’m afraid of them in the bedroom at night.”

Jules’ story serves as a crucial reminder for everyone to regularly check their charging cables and unplug them when not in use, potentially saving their homes from disaster.
