When a sitting senator calls traditional views on gender “violence against divinity,” every Bible-believing American should pay attention.
Story Snapshot
- Senator Raphael Warnock told a Los Angeles synagogue that **transphobia is “an offense to the glory of God”**.[2]
- Warnock branded transphobia and homophobia as “violence not only against humanity, but against divinity”.[2]
- He accused the Black church of being homophobic and challenged its historic teachings on gender and sexuality.[8]
- His remarks highlight a growing clash between progressive politicians and traditional faith over sex, family, and religious freedom.[9]
Warnock’s Sermon: Transphobia As “Violence Against Divinity”
Democrat Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia recently preached at IKAR, a progressive synagogue in Los Angeles, and used the pulpit to attack what he called transphobia and homophobia in the church. In the sermon, Warnock declared that “transphobia, xenophobia in all of its forms” is “violence not only against humanity, but against divinity” and “an offense to the glory of God”. He tied this language to a broader call for inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people in religious life and public policy. For many conservative Christians, this is a direct challenge to the belief that God created people male and female and that sex and gender are fixed realities rooted in biology and Scripture.[2][3][8]
Warnock pushed this argument further by saying Christians must “push hard against bigotry and racism and anti-Semitism, transphobia, xenophobia in all of its forms”. He framed resistance to transgender ideology as a moral failure equal to racism and anti-Semitism. This framing puts ordinary churchgoers who believe in biological sex and traditional marriage in the same moral category as people who hate others because of race or religion. That move alarms many believers who see a big difference between rejecting hateful behavior and refusing to redefine basic truths about man, woman, and family. The sermon did not offer a detailed biblical explanation for how disagreement over gender ideology becomes “violence against divinity”; the claim was made as a moral declaration rather than a worked-out doctrine.[2]
Calling The Black Church “Homophobic” And Demanding Change
Warnock also turned his fire on his own tradition, telling the Los Angeles audience that the Black church is “homophobic” and has long struggled with “issues like homophobia” and gender inequality. He presented himself as a reformer inside the church, saying he has challenged members of his congregation over what he described as deeply rooted homophobia. He did not cite current survey data or specific case studies to prove how widespread these attitudes are; instead, he spoke in broad terms about contradictions inside Black churches. For many Black Christians who have leaned on the church for generations, hearing a senator describe their congregations as homophobic from an out-of-state pulpit feels less like pastoral care and more like a political rebuke.[2][8]
To justify his push for change, Warnock used religious history and civil rights imagery. He praised Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel for marching with Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. as a model of interfaith solidarity against bigotry. He also described his political vision as a “grand and majestic cathedral,” suggesting that true democracy recognizes “the divine spark in every person”. In this picture, accepting transgender identity becomes part of honoring God’s image in all people. But the senator acknowledged no tension between this view and the Bible’s teaching that God created humanity male and female, a text long used by churches to defend clear boundaries between men and women. That silence stands out in a debate where many conservative believers see Genesis as central.[1][8]
Weaponizing Faith Against Traditional Views Of Sex And Family
Warnock’s sermon fits a broader pattern where progressive faith leaders use religious language to drive support for transgender policies and to shame traditional believers who disagree. Media reports note that since 2021, dozens of Republican-led states have introduced or passed bills on gender issues, including bans or limits on biological males in female sports and restrictions on experimental gender treatments for minors. In response, some liberal clergy frame opposition to these policies as hateful and unchristian, while many conservative pastors argue they are protecting children, women’s sports, and basic truth about the human body. The clash is not just political; it is spiritual, touching how Americans read Scripture and define human identity.[8][9][10][14]

Research shows that religious belief often shapes views on transgender issues, with more traditional believers reporting higher levels of skepticism toward transgender ideology. At the same time, progressive religious groups and activist organizations accuse “Christian nationalists” and conservative churches of using religion as a weapon to deny transgender rights. Warnock’s claim that transphobia is “violence against divinity” lands in the middle of this fight. For conservatives, left-leaning politicians are now trying to turn basic Christian teachings on sex and gender into moral crimes, and to push those ideas into law. That raises serious questions about religious freedom, parental rights, and the right of churches to teach the Bible without being branded violent or bigoted.[12][13]
